New York is a compact city, consisting of thousands of villages stacked up on one another, reaching towards the sky. Open space here is a premium, something that’s often considered a luxury. Our parks are public and shared, but finding a spot of land to cultivate can be a challenge. Even our community gardens have waiting lists for small plots of 5 x 10 feet or even smaller! We are a city of Juliette Balconies that are too narrow to stand on, ledges, windows, and fire escapes.

Curiouser and curiouser.
The choice to live here though, doesn’t erase our need to put a hand in the soil, to live with plants, to commune with them, to share a home and space with them. We are human creatures, born of the earth, and as such, we want to connect with our origins even in the seemingly artificial world of the city.

Beneath the Bodhi Tree.
To that end, GALA seeks to make it possible for anyone to grow something in any situation. Our terraria are perfect for the corner of a desk in a windowless office, the bookshelf of your bedroom in an apartment share. Glassed in they are protected from our dear feline companions, as well as the vagaries of apartment cooling and heating. Some even come with their own light sources for those that live facing brick walls, others with plants that cannot stand the light that crave the lowest light you can give them.

We offer GALA made terraria, as well as doing custom work for individuals and businesses. We also offer Terrarium Workshops for adults, children, and families, for those that want to learn how to make these little worlds for themselves and their loved ones. Keep an eye on this page for upcoming workshop announcements!
